Lilian Nakigozi

It Takes Courage to Fight hunger and poverty.

Empowering Women in Low-Income Ugandan Communities.

It takes courage to rise from poverty, and Lilian exemplifies this with her remarkable journey from the Katanga Slum to becoming the founder of Women Smiles Uganda. Raised amidst immense hardships in one of Kampala’s largest slums, Katanga, with a single mother and eight siblings, Lilian’s childhood was marked by hunger and financial struggles. They lacked the means to grow food and often survived on just one meal a day, sometimes going to bed on empty stomachs. At the age of eight, Lilian faced the heart-wrenching loss of her three-year-old sister due to hunger, a pivotal moment that ignited her determination to create change for women and children living in extreme poverty.

Despite the adversities, Lilian excelled academically, earning scholarships due to her exceptional grades. This opportunity allowed her to pursue a degree in Business Administration from Makerere University, where she honed her skills and knowledge. In 2018, fueled by her passion and experiences, Lilian decided to take action and address the pressing issues of hunger and poverty in low-income communities.

Teaching herself sustainable farming techniques became a turning point in Lilian’s journey. She delved into sustainable vertical farming, mastering concepts that would later form the foundation of Women Smiles Uganda. The non-profit organization focuses on improving food security and livelihoods by supporting women, young teenage mothers, and youth in low-income areas. Through capacity-building training in sustainable vertical farming, Lilian empowers these communities to cultivate fresh produce, enhancing their food security and economic stability.

Moreover, Women Smiles Uganda doesn’t stop at farming education. Lilian also prioritizes maternal-child nutrition, ensuring that mothers receive crucial information and resources to nourish their families effectively. The organization also facilitates market linkages, enabling community members to sell surplus agricultural produce, thus generating income and fostering economic independence.

Lilian’s journey embodies resilience, determination, and compassion. Her commitment to making a meaningful impact in her community resonates through her tireless efforts with Women Smiles Uganda. Through her courage, passion, and perseverance, Lilian continues to inspire others and create positive change, showcasing the transformative power of one individual’s dedication to uplifting those in need.
